I am on a serious reading roll right now. Yesterday, after finishing The Great Alone with a heart full of a broken pieces and angst, I knew it was time to pick up something light and airy. The Unhoneymooners, by Christina Lauren, was JUST what I needed. To start off, I should probably say that books like this one remind me why I love contemporary fiction so much.
Anyways, the story is told from Olive’s point of view as she agrees to pretend and be her twin sister on the trip of a lifetime. Olive, being a more relatable character, is currently living second best to her twin sister, jobless, and down and out on luck. That all seems to change once this trip falls into fruition. Did I mention the trip of a lifetime was supposed to be her sister’s honeymoon? It sounds great and all until she finds out she must go on the trip with her sister’s new brother in law and arch nemesis, Ethan.
Olive and Ethan embark on the trip of a lifetime, despite mutual hate and discomfort in each other’s company. Along they way they find themselves questioning their laugher, banter and lack of hatred towards each other. The undeniable tensions turns into heartwarming charm as you root for these two people to get together.
This wouldn’t be a true contemporary fiction love story if there weren’t unnecessary drama towards the end. The Pride and Prejudice vibes are out of this world. You get the picture.
I would definitely recommend this book. I give it 4.5 stars and can see myself reading this book again in the future. I completed this book within 24 hours and adored the prose and writing style. I am disappointed I let this advanced readers copy, courtesy of Gallery Publishing Group, sit on my shelf for over a year and a half. I will not sleep on any other Christina Lauren book from here on out. (Recommend)
