The Wicked King – Review

I’m going to be honest right off the bat; I DID NOT enjoy The Cruel Price. I read it out of pure obligation to the Bookstagram Community because the hype was unreal. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I did not understand what he or she saw. When The Wicked King came out I went thru the exact same motions. Everyone was reading it, loving it, and obsessing over it all over social media. I didn’t buy a copy, even though I went back and forth. So I waited for the hype to die down and waited for an available copy from our local library. I read about the first 100 pages and struggled, big time!

I was about to give up when I saw there was also a free audiobook version available. I started over from the beginning and IMMEDIATELY feel in love the with narrators story telling style. She changed my mind completely. I was able to recognize traits from certain characters in ways I didn’t while reading. I have a pretty big imagination and can usually comprehend different personality traits, but this time was different.

The narrator really made a huge difference and I wanted more! I was able to understand Holly Black’s character development and fall in love with the cruel ways and sneakiness of the main characters. It was so good and cleaver! The way things left off at the end with Jude and Cardan left me wanting to preorder the next book. This was a complete 360!

I highly recommend this series, but on audio. (FOUR STARS)
