What’s In My Hiking Bag

I find that one of the most important necessities when it comes to any outdoor activity is making sure you have the proper items packed in your hiking bag. I’m not saying you have to pack an entire weekend’s worth of supplies for a four hour hike, but it’s still important to be prepared.

On January 1st, this year, Jeff and I went out, on a hike, to a local trail neither of us have ever trekked. Everything was going great until we realized we had wandered off the marked path, and got ourselves into a sticky situation. Being that it was January 1st, the ground was super muddy and between losing our way, the weather, rapidly losing afternoon sunlight, and ground conditions, we found ourselves stuck and unable to trace our steps successfully thanks to muddy hills. It was such a horrible feeling knowing that we now had to scale down an unknown mountain just to make our way back to the car. It was scary. I was unprepared, not wearing the proper shoes, and had zero supplies in my hiking bag to potentially help us get out of this situation safe and sound.

Needless to say, we survived. We were able to scale down the mountain safely. It was probably one of the most physically challenging things I had ever experienced. Since that day, I refuse to go anywhere unprepared, new or familiar. With that being said, I wanted to share what I carry in my hiking bag on a daily basis. Below are a list of items I don’t leave the house without. (*Some may be affiliate links)

Backpack: This is an updated version of the backpack I use every day. I love that it’s lightweight and heavy duty at the same time. It has so many features and compartments for everything. I can use this for an afternoon of adventure or for even longer outings.

Hiking Socks: I always carry an extra pair of hiking socks. Since I started wearing these, I haven’t had a single issue with keeping my feet dry. They are also super affordable and are available on Amazon Prime’s Two-Day shipping list.

Serrated Pocket Knife: I never head into the woods without this baby. If I would have had a pocket knife with me on the day I got stuck, I might have been able to cut something to help pull myself out of the stuck space and situation. These knives are super affordable and honestly just a good “peace of mind” factor. I hike by myself a lot and it’s always a good feeling knowing that I could potentially protect myself from a dangerous situation. Fingers crossed I never have to actually use it, but until then it will continue to live in my pocket and be available for immediate access.

Sun Protection, First Aid Kit, & Bug Spray.

Water Bottle: You can never go wrong with a Yeti. I know they are super expensive, but trust me they are worth the investment. As someone who drinks tons and tons of water whenever participating in outdoor adventure, I find that these bottles give me the most range. You can always go with a more affordable brand. Every big box store carries water bottles, and it mainly comes down to budget, style and drinking preference.

Food/Snacks: This is an important one for me. I always make sure I have some type of nutritional item(s) with me at all times. My go-to is usually oranges. I try to slice at least two oranges ahead of time so that I can grab them and go. Oranges are a great source of Vitamin C and work as an energy booster and pick me up while on the trails. Another snack I always keep in my bag are Nature’s Bakery Fig Bars. These are the perfect snack for on the go. They are plant based, whole grain, and completely vegan. Did i mention how delicious they are? It’s like a treat without the guilt.

Fire Starter: Lately, I’ve seen so many fact fire starters on social media. If I’m being honest, I just keep a book of matches and a long candle lighter in my hiking bag; nothing fancy. This is something I definitely recommend having, just because you never know.

Camera: I am obsessed with my Sony A6000. My go to lens is a 35mm f/1.8 Prime Lens. I am still in beginning phases of becoming an avid photographer. The Sony has given me the tools to purchase an affordable model that I can grow into for years to come.

Reading Material: If you are new to my page, it’s time you learn that reading is one of my favorite hobbies and passion. I always have book or kindle with me. You never know when you will find the right rock, bench, or beach. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are always good choices to keep the adventure mood alive.

Extras: Trekking Poles, Headlamp/Flash Light, Essential Oils, Portable Charger, Sunglasses, & anything else your heart desires.

Seasonal: Hats, Gloves, Scarf, Hand-Warmers.

Everyone’s essential packing lists are going to be different. Pack what is best for you in your hiking bag. Happy Trekking!
